The Islands

The Isles of Scilly lie fewer than 30 miles off the Cornish coast, but visitors often imagine that they have travelled to a different country. There is so much in Scilly that cannot be found anywhere else in England, whether it is wildlife, archaeology, landscape or seascape. The Islands' sub-tropical feel, tranquility and welcoming residents add to the sense that Scilly is an exceptional place.

As befits an incredibly beautiful place, the Isles of Scilly are designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The purpose of the AONB designation is to safeguard, enhance and promote the distinctive landscape, wildlife, historical and architectural character of the Isles of Scilly, whilst fostering the social and economic well-being of its people.

This website introduces the Islands - uninhabited and inhabited alike - and explains the role of the AONB Partnership in conserving and enhancing the special qualities of Scilly.
