Local School group learn about local food production.
The Isles of Scilly AONB has worked with the Five Islands School in Scilly to introduce children to the issues, both positive and negative, surrounding local food production on both a global and local scale. The group visited local food producers on St Agnes, went on a wild food walk around St Mary's and were taught how to pick and dress crab by Sue Hicks, a local wild food expert. This practical approach allowed the group to experience first hand what was involved in growing and producing local food and gave them the opportunity to meet a number of farmers, producers and experts. The sessions proved to be a great success with the children. A local teacher has said ' the sessions are providing context for the issues that have been raised, which makes the theoretical issues learnt both in the sessions and classroom relevant. This program is really good.' The AONB are delighted with the response and success of the program and are preparing to deliver another six week program focusing on waste in September.
